Engineers without Borders –
creating new horizons together

“Contributing to improving the quality of life” is a motto that not only fits with ILF’s vision, but certainly also applies to the association Engineers without Borders (IOG). In Austria, around 200 students and engineers work on a voluntary basis in four regional groups on various projects worldwide in order to create long-term social added value locally.

For example the regional group Tyrol (ILF Austria) is currently supported by five ILF volunteers.
Their activities span all areas from purely technical project work and handicrafts to cultural exchange, project management and event planning, public relations, fundraising and environmental management.

IOG projects with volunteer work by ILF staff:

  • Edu Zapa, Mexico – Rehabilitation of an elementary school
  • Rago Ciao, Nepal – Water supply for agriculture
  • Tshuwa, Congo – Water for Tshumbe
  • Eramatare, Tanzania – Water, source of life

“Having completed various professional assignments in developing countries on behalf of ILF, I also wanted to make a personal contribution, which is how I came across the organization Engineers Without Borders. For me, being able to use technical means to get to the roots of problems is a meaningful way to provide long-term development aid.”

“I like the “Engineers Without Borders” concept: volunteers with technical know-how, personal commitment and corresponding motivation, who are the key to making a difference, together. Whilst pursuing this goal, we get to know other cultures and new people and are offered opportunities to expand our horizons.”

“Engineers Without Borders gives me the opportunity to make my own personal contribution to creating better living conditions in the Global South – as part of a committed group and through technical development cooperation. The social and professional exchange with colleagues, as well as the cooperation with the people involved in the project on site, are a new source of motivation for me time and time again.”
